To get these pictures I had Anna put a bright flashlight in her mouth and then held the shutter in the bulb setting down for 1 second. The other picture was done by having Anna twist the tire swing as much as she could then let it go and run around it with the flashlight. I was going to have her just spinning while sitting in the tire swing but it was frozen so it wouldn’t move with her in it so I improvised. My goal was just to get the light trails and the tier swing but since there are street lights and car lights all around you can pretty much see everything. When I was editing it I changed the colors to black and white that way the focus was on the light trail and not the surrounding colors. The goal of the picture of the flashlight in her mouth was to make it look creepy and kind of like a ghost or witch type of thing. I didn’t edit this picture at all and kept the colors the same. Overall I think both of these pictures were a success though I would have liked to have a place to go where it was completely black

Social Commentary

On the Side of the Highway
If you’ve ever driven around Montana then you have seen these crosses. They mark the number of people that have died on the roads. I drove out here from New Hampshire and when I crossed the Montana state line these started to appear. I counted them until I got to Billings and reached over 300 crosses. At first it was just a game to keep me occupied while in the car but then it was more of a tribute to those that died; by counting the number I was recognizing that they had died and that it was noticed. I pass eight crosses twice a day every day when I go up to the barn and though most days I don’t pay attention to them because it is too early in the morning, but other days I think of how easy it would be for me to be one of those crosses that people pass by without thinking about. Maybe it is because I’m from out of state that these mean more to me because I don’t see them all that often, but I think that people should pay attention to them and drive more careful on the roads that way they don’t become a cross that gets overlooked on the road.
What I did for this project was take a picture of the road and then Photoshop the crosses into it, I was going to take pictures of one of the eight crosses that I pass everyday but it's always too dark when I pass them in the morning. I made the picture of the mountains and road darker and made it look more bleak because it is a bleak thing to think about. I think that it is a successful image in that I hope it will make people think about these crosses next time they see them.

This is an environmental portrait of someone I went hiking with. I just happened to take this photo without really thinking about this assignment but later I felt like it worked really well for it. I tried to recreate this scene with different people up on Zimmerman but the feeling was not the same. This person is Sam Cook and she enjoys being outdoors hiking like this. Though the picture does not focus on her face too much, I feel like it captures her sense of wonderment accurately. In this picture I liked that the background is the mountains and hills and there is no man-made objects, when I tried to do this at Zimmerman I kept getting the city in the background and I liked having the nature better. I also really like that she is wearing all black and it contrasts nicely with the bright clouds and sky. To take this picture I went down on lower rocks to give it that feel like she is on top of a mountain looking down on the world. I took this picture without her knowing because I like the feel of natural poses rather than the ones people do when they know someone is taking a picture of them. Overall I think this was a very happy accident that works well for this assignment and though I tried other times to do this on purpose the affect was not the same.

This picture looks really grainy because I didn't realize that my ISO was on auto so it was really high, by the time I realized that it was too late to fix it.
