Venice, Verona, and Milan

Friday November 7th- Sunday 9th

Friday morning a group of 6 of us (including Dave) left the Villa for the train station that would take us to Venice. Now it's been pretty rainy this past week and Venice being the city on water is bound to be much more full of water in rainy weather. However we didn't let that stop us from having an amazing time. We arrived in Venice at 3ish, we dropped our stuff off at the hotel and went out to explore. The streets were absolutely gorgeous with all the water running through them (I've been told Venice smells bad but since we came in the colder weather we didn't smell too much grossness, score for us). I loved not seeing any cars driving around smauging up the air. It rained most of the day but it was a wicked cool experience, as we had the pleasure of being there during the highest tides of the week so the water came up and over the streets and flooded most of the walkways (aside from the wet shoes and water you know isn't sanitary touching you, this was actually pretty cool and we didn't mind much). The best part of Friday night was the light painting we did in the San Marco square. Light painting is basically leaving your camera shutter open to capture as much light as it can (a tripod is necessary for this) and using flashlights or glow sticks you can draw things in the air and the camera catches it as something seeable. We did this for a good hour and a half in the wet, just playing around with different words to write and the composition and what not, it was super fun. People gave us the weirdest looks as we all waved our flashlights around (and the fact that I was making weird noises because why not) to make the words.
Saturday we just walked around the city taking pictures of the people and the wetness and enjoying the scenery. There comes a point when your shoes are so soaked that you no longer care about walking through massive puddles, breaking this point actually makes life a bit easier (until you realize you only have one pair of shoes and they're never going to dry before the next day). Around 11 we hopped on the train and headed to Verona. I wish I had stayed awake for the train ride but with it being rainy out I just get so sleepy and can't help but slowly nod off to the beautiful scenery. For those of you that don't know, Verona is where Romeo and Juliet are from (so of course there are little Romeos and Juliets everywhere). Juliet's house is located here and we just had to see it, and located at this house is a statue of Juliet. There is a tradition that if you rub Juliet's boob then you will have true love, three people in our group did this not to name names but Bailey, Ana, and Dave (unfortunately I am doomed to never have true love). We walked around the city enjoyed the scenery and then went to the train station at 6ish to make it to our resting stop for the night in Milan. Once we got to Milan we weren't much in the mood to do much touristy stuff so we stopped off at the hotel and then went out for gelato and nutella.
Sunday us girls slept in a bit (if you count 8 as sleeping in) and then went off to meet Dave (he just had to go see the Last Supper, like geez what's so important about that, pshh) at the castle in the park. This castle was pretty huge, it even had a moat (come on how cool is that). Then we were off to see the Duomo of Milan. This cathedral was super cool, none of the churches I have seen yet have compared to it. Unfortunately on Sundays they don't allow people inside but just looking at the outside was enough. After admiring this for a while we wandered over to one of the oldest malls in the world. Of course this being Milan the stores in this mall were that of Louis Vitton and Prada so we never actually went in a store just admired from the outside. There was a divot in the floor that you are supposed to stick your heel in and spin around three times for luck, I did participate in this tradition and I think I did it quite fabulously if I do say so myself. We scattered to get lunch after that, my group going to McDonalds (yes we went to McDonalds in a foreign country because when you've been eating nothing but pasta and pizza for two months you really start craving meat and greasy foods and you'll settle for even McDonalds, and you know what it does actually taste better in different countries aside from the fact they charge for ketchup) then waiting for the train.
We left Milan at 2 with our train headed to Florence for a connecting train to take us to Perugia. The first train was awesome because we got to sit in business class (so fancy), apparently they gave out snacks and wine for that but I must've been asleep for that part of the trip (bummer I know). The last leg of our long weekend was spent sleeping on the packed train of people. It felt so good to finally reach Perugia and know that I won't be on a train for another week. I said goodbye to Rebekah, as she was to stay at the train station to catch the next train to Rome so she could head home (er, to my house) on Monday. I almost didn't travel this weekend as Venice is quite expensive to go to but I am very happy I spent the money and had one last fantastic week in Italy before I make my leave this Saturday (how did that go by so quick, holy crap). Before I dwell on my departure too much here are some pictures from the weekend.
Now that is ocean side property.
Ana and Bailey looking adorable.
The water streets are super cool.
Gondola! Unfortunately we did not ride in one (they're kind of expensive).
San Marco square.
Water streets at night, so super awesome. I can't even tell you the awesomeness.
Night San Marco square, their were people here I just had a long exposure so they all disappeared.
The light painting, we also spelt out RMC, Italy, and RMC Italy. This was a lot of fun.
Ah wave!
Whoa, bigger wave! Oh yeah and gondolas.
These are boots you can buy to cover your shoes which is actually a really good idea but we thought we were above these ugly boots. I wish I had bought some.
Adorable father and son, I may or may not have stalked them a bunch for more pictures.
Adorable little girl in the water, I did not stalk her only two photos exist in my files. I swear.
These are platforms to walk on so people who didn't wear water boots (like us) can walk.
Clearly a local Venetian, trudging through the water on the way to work.
The wall people put love letters on by Juliet's house.
I wonder how often they clean this up.
A cool fountain.
Pretty flower.
The castle! The grass is where the moat used to be.
This guy and his dog were super cute, the dog was so happy to play fetch, this picture does not show how excited he was.
The Arch of Peace, of course when you are trying to take a picture of it without people and this one couple stands in the middle of it for 10 minutes peace is not on your mind.
The Duomo at Milan! So gorgeous! I love this church.
Look at how cool it is! Ugh.
Apparently I have a thing for creeping on strangers children. But he was super adorable waving to the pigeons.
A section of the door on the church, people touch Mary and Jesus' hands so much the bronze has not tarnished like the rest of it. I really liked the look of this.
Ah, amazing church!

The weekend

Thursday October 7th

So tomorrow I am off with a group headed to Venice, Verona, and Milan for the weekend. I probably won't be able to post much unless k have good wifi on my phone so don't expect much from this blog for the next few days.
Today's highlight was learning to make tiramisu, I learned that the lady fingers soak up the alcohol very fast and that it's an art to get the right balance of espresso and rum to soak into the lady fingers to make it not over whelming. I will attempt to make this when k get home but I'm sure it won't be the same without the assistance of Rosella (who is a master chef). Unfortunately I was too eager to have the finished product of this lovely dessert so I never thought to take a picture of it so this will be a rather bland blog post with no pictures, but who needs pictures when you all have my great sense of humor to appreciate? With that I bid you ciao so I can sleep before my morning departure, it's sure to be a fun (wet) weekend.

Filgno, Assisi, and Gobbio (what a great name)

Wednesday November 5th

Remember, remember the 5th of November, the gunpowder treason and plot, I know of no reason the gunpowder should ever be forgot. Now that I got that out of my system lets get on to the good stuff.
Today we went on a class adventure to several towns/ cities. First stop was Filigno where we were given special access to a church containing a massive plaster skeleton, we are very lucky to have Rosella here at the Villa she gets us into the coolest places and usually pretty cheap. This skeleton was so big that someone laid down next to the hand of it and was still not bigger than it.
Then we made our way to Assisi to see the Basilica of St. Mary and the Angels as well as the Basilica of St. Francis, this was super cool and Rosella pulled some strings and found a way to permit us to take pictures inside of the St. Mary Basilica (which was so awesome of her).
We made our way to the town of Gobbio (they have some really weird names sometimes) and just shot some pictures of the town. Unfortunately it is pretty rainy today so we got back to the Villa earlier than planned since sunset pictures were a no go.
In other news this weekend a group of 6 of us are spending the weekend in Venice, Milan, and Verona. We leave Friday morning and get back in the afternoon Sunday, it will probably rain some but how can you spend any length of time in Italy and not visit these places? Also I can't believe the semester is almost over, we have a little over a week left of classes and I'm going to be really sad to leave this place I didn't do nearly as much as I wanted. After I leave the Villa on the 14th I'll be in Rome for a day doing some last minute appreciation of the city and then I fly to Ireland on the 15th to stay there for 5 days. After Ireland I go to Amsterdam for 4 days to hangout with the one and only Amber Fernald (who I hope is as excited to be reunited as I am)! On the 23rd I fly home, it will be awesome to finally be home for Thanksgiving since I've been at school the past two years for it. And that will be the end of my study abroad adventure, its coming too soon though, holy crap.
To keep myself form freaking out too much on with the pictures.
Bird nose skeleton man.
Such big skeleton.
Megan is so leetle.
The St. Marie and Angels church, pretty cool.
Man praying inside the church.
A neat shot of the candles and Jesus on the cross.
Some cool stained glass windows.
Walking up to St. Francis church, however we weren't allowed to take pictures in there so this is all I have of it.
A shot from Gobbio.
Bailey being majestic as she looks out at the town.
That pose Elyssa. Such professional.
A nice little walkway.
Over looking the town.

Firenze

Friday 31st- October 2nd

This weekend we all went to Firenze with Dave (Firenze is Florence in italian). We took a train from Perugia straight to Firenze (it was my first time being on a train not the subway, which was pretty cool). The first day we got our special passes that let us skip the line and get us into all the museums and other fun places and we went to the Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore (usually just called the Duomo), this church is the first of its kind to have a dome that big and built like it was, it's very impressive to see. We tried to get to the top of the Duomo in time for sunset but were unable to, but we did get up there in time to still see some  lingering colors and all the lights turn on in the city which was amazing. After that we made our way to dinner and since it was Halloween we couldn't just go back to our hotel we had to stay up and see the night a bit. We played cards on the steps of the Duomo (how many people can say they've done that) and eventually I made it to the train station to pick up Rebekah.
Now Rebekah worked with me this summer at the ranch and we became very close so she decided to visit me while I am in Italy, she was supposed to meet me at the train station at 23:30, as 00:30 was approaching obviously something was not right. I tried everything to get ahold of her with no luck and just as I was certain she never left the states as I hadn't heard from her since before her plane left (it was 1:20 at this point) I was ready to go back to the hotel and worry some more. As I was leaving the station though she happens to be standing out there with three of my other classmates, apparently she had gotten off one stop too soon and there were no more trains going into Florence for the rest of the night but a cop (thank you dear cop) called her a cab and got her to the hotel where she found my classmates and then went to collect me at the train station. It was a very stressful night but I will never forget it.
Saturday we got up bright and early to meet Dave at the Uffizi Gallery so we could get in before the crowd. We saw some amazing paintings there some by Botticelli (which were amazing like I can't even describe the beauty of these) and paintings by Titian, Michelangelo, and Raphael. This museums is pretty massive but I think my favorite room was one I named "the room of defensive poses" because every statue in it was in the funniest pose trying to get away from some unseen evil, I was quite amused and may or may not have mimicked many of the poses. After that we got some kebabs (turkish food yes but they're everywhere in Italy and they are soo good) and went to the Galileo Museum. As I've said before museums can be very exhausting so after that we all took a nap before going out for sunset pictures. We climbed the tower next to the Duomo and got some amazing shots of the it all lit up by the setting sun. We got some more kebabs after that and then found the carousel to take pictures of.
Sunday Rebekah and I woke up early to take sunrise pictures on the bridge by the river (it's getting awfully chilly here in Italy, I'm not liking the sudden temperature change) and when we were done freezing our fingers off we went and met Dave at the Academia (this houses The David (notice the capital T) and we were really excited to see it before the crowds got there). We were the first five people in the museum so we got plenty of pictures of Michelangelo's David before people were ruining the scenery. This sculpture is amazing, the size and detail that went into it are just breathtaking. Other than The David this museum doesn't hold a lot of other famous things so we weren't in here long. Next we went to the not so modern Modern Art Museum (everything was about 100 years old in it but was still very cool to see). This museum is attached to 4 other museums so we went in some of them also. After that we looked for a lunch spot and on the way tried on a few leather jackets (after all Florence is known for their leather goods) but alas I did not buy one. And finally we were off to the train station again to return to the Villa.
But the story doesn't end there, we had the sons of Bruno Ceccobelli (a famous italian painter and sculptor whom we met with a few weeks earlier) had joined us for dinner and though they didn't understand much of what we said and vice versa (we haven't learned that much italian yet) they did know the word karaoke, so we set up the necessary machines (speaker, computer, microphones, and some real instruments, oh yeah and a few bottles of wine and scotch) and went at it for the remainder of the night.
And here is proof of my escapades. Be prepared for an overload of images. Sorry the images are out of order I don't know how that happened.
The David by Michelangelo, pretty awesome.
Dos hands doo. Da veins.
Sunrise at the jewelry bridge.
More sunrise.
This is Saint Bartholomew, you know this because he is tied up about to be flayed.
Butterfly lady statue silhouette.
This paint was caked on here, it must've taken years to dry.
Sunset from the top of the Bell Tower.
A nice long exposure of the carousel.
More sunrise of the bridge.
And more sunrise.
Sunset fro the bell tower o the Duomo.
About 300 year old violin. Pretty nifty.
And another sunrise.
Such concentration.
Even more concentration.
What a cutie, with Mike in the backgrounding creeping hard.
Ana and Bailey asleep on the train.
Mike doing the knowledge thing.
Jesus rays in the church, no way.
Church candles.
Ceiling of the Duomo, this is really cool and intricate, I wish I could've gotten better pictures of it.
Sunset taken of the bell tower from the Duomo.
Night time jewelry bridge.
Pretty sweet sculpture in the Uffizi.
Wish I could have a painting of myself on my horse with a awesome bird/bat over my head.
I don't know what this is but Galileo made it.
Ana being a lovely model. Stupid crane though.
The Duomo in all it's domeness.
